Step 1: Take Your Tongue Photos

The key is to be consistent when taking pictures and comparing results

  • Use natural lighting, standing by a window is great.
  • Keep your head level, don’t look down at the phone.
  • Even better: have someone take the photo for you!

For the top of your tongue:

Stick your tongue out and tilt the phone downward 15–30° so you’re capturing the surface with light hitting from above.

For the bottom of your tongue:

Place the tip behind your upper teeth, then tilt the phone 15° upward or shoot straight on to capture the sublingual veins.

Next, answer these important health questions:

  • Swelling/Water Retention?

This checks for fluid buildup (edema).

  • Better or Worse with Pressure?

If pressure makes it worse, it might be an excess condition. If you feel worse from exertion, it could be deficiency.

  • How is your sleep?

This helps assess if your nervous system is overactive.
